ep. 27: Elements of a Good Podcast
So, last week we debunked a big fear that might be keeping you from starting a podcast. Building on that, we’re going on the assumption that you’re ready to make your move! Or, you may have another, equally stalling fear or hang-up… You may be earnestly confused about what to include when starting a successful podcast.
Having these elements does not guarantee your podcast will be successful.
But omitting them almost guarantees that it won’t be.
Now let’s dive in!
“Must-haves” for your podcast
Keep in mind that although it may not be possible to start a podcast with no money, you’ll find that only one of these ingredients will cost you anything. So be encouraged!
Intro/Outro: These are pretty self-explanatory, but what IS important is the CTA (see #4) that you include. The intro will always be: listen to today’s episode… Your outro, which is equally important, may vary.
Practical value: Always, always, ALWAYS think about what value you are offering to the listener. Giving them a practical, usable takeaway will keep you top-of-mind to them.
Catchy theme music: Look for music that matches you and your brand and complements you and your episode. Important: keep your volume lower than the music - it’s not a competition.
A Call to Action (CTA): You need one of these at the end of every episode. A CTA helps your listeners know what to do next. This can change depending on the topic but stick to ONE CTA per episode. Be clear - be concise - be confident.
Good audio quality: People won’t listen if the sound is bad, but there are ways to do this on a budget. For example, for less than $100 (which is also a business expense….Find out more on Erica Goode’s episode on return on investment) you can get a good-quality starter mic and a good set of headphones.
Passion: There’s no cost to this one! And there’s also no replacement for it. Having this will truly make your podcast notable and memorable.
Be unique: Ever heard of the KLT factor? Know…like…trust… At the end of the day, that’s why people buy from you. And here is where you start to build that! When your listeners get to know you, they’ll like you (trust me), and then trust you. So you be YOU!
Be confident: The biggest thing that will kill this is “filler words.” Not only “um”, “like”, or “ya know,” this also includes shallow responses to your guest’s wonderful insights. Create a podcast script template that you can tweak week-to-week, or craft bullet points and then develop them as you record.
Keep it simple, sweetheart: Stick to one or a few short takeaways (see #2). If you’re doing an interview, remember, it’s your job to keep your guest on topic. Make sure you guide the conversation.
It’s not about you: It’s ALL about your listener. Serving them. Helping them. Giving them tools that THEY will need for success! Of course, share a bit about yourself or your life, but don’t make it about you. Ever.
