ep. 187: Fighting Words & Bossing Your Heart Around with Singer/Songwriter Ellie Holcomb
Depression...crippling lies...stolen joy and lack of peace…fear...
Are you fighting any of these battles?
If so, you’re not alone.
Christian musician, songwriter, and author Ellie Holcomb talks about some of the tools she uses to fight these same battles.
It’s simple, really - “fightin’ words”
What are “fightin’ words” and how can I create my own?
Fightin’ words are words you can use in your everyday battles… Words that can help you be an overcomer by bringing to mind God’s power and presence in your life. Here are some practical ways to get started…
Acknowledge the lies - but ground yourself in Someone stronger. Our culture has plenty of lies to go around, and if we buy into them, it can serve to separate us from the Lord. What are some of the lies you believe?
Spend time with the Lord - After all, He is the beginning and the end; our source of strength and faithful Savior.
Praise Him - You don’t have to have a good voice, just a sincere heart. The words you may find yourself singing often serve as a reminder to our own weary hearts...
Boss your soul around - David does this, too! Just read the Psalms; Psalm 43:5 is a good example.
Think on these things -
God’s Word is alive - And capable of accomplishing so much on our behalf. See Hebrews 4:12.
He promises that His word will nourish us and accomplish His purposes - See Isaiah 55:11 for a reminder.
What He has already done for us - If you have a hard time remembering, think about what you could use as a personal Ebenzer (see below)
The fact that God started and is committed to a relationship with us - even when we stray. Remember, He reached out to us first, and He is faithful even when we are not.
He is our place of safety - “The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.” Psalm 18:2
And finally, to have something to remember...
Craft your personal Ebenezer
What is an Ebenezer? It’s a song or scripture or quote that will help you remember all that God has brought you through. The name comes from 1 Samuel, where Ebenezer set a stone to remind God’s people of the victory they had over the Philistines, all because of God’s hand. Take some time today to consider what could be your Ebenezer.
What a message of encouragement - and a joy-filled conversation with practical words of wisdom.

In this episode, you will find out why Ellie started memorizing scripture!
I’m so sick of the enemy stealing our JOY.
John 10:10
It’s not enough to acknowledge the lies, we have to ground ourselves in the Truth of God’s word.
Memorizing God’s word changed us.
Sit in God’s word. Write out of that overflow.
When I read His word, I want to sing.
If I can sing it, it helps me believe it.
Everybody lost something in 2020.
Light is stronger than the dark.
Water always moves to the lowest place. There is a current living water that will carry you.
He will meet us in our deepest sorrows and divisions.
