Seeing as the word that has continued coming up for me recently is the word DIFFERENT, I was intrigued when I read it in the book, Grit. You’ve heard the definition of insanity is getting the same results after doing the same activities over and over, right?
What do we do if we are not ecstatic about our results from 2023? We have to do DIFFERENT activities.
I want more. More of Jesus. More meaningful conversations, more generosity, more freedom, more impact, more squeezing out every last drop of what I can give to people around me.
Deliberate Practice- is defined as: being effortful in nature, with the main goal of personal improvement of performance rather than enjoyment, and is often performed without immediate reward. source: Performance Psychology, 2011.
Deliberate practice is not doing a task over and over again…it’s desiring to practice and Improve performance…what we as writers, speakers, and business owners do. We don’t mindlessly do a task over and over, we are laser-focused on IMPROVING our performance…to fine-tune our skills so that we can communicate better, write better, serve our clients better, and sell better.
So, Angela Duckworth and Anders Ericsson did a study of spelling bee contest winners. A journalist had been following a few participants in the spelling competitions. There was a 12-year old girl named Kerry Close who studied differently. The journalist noted that Kerry “does more word study by herself. She works with numerous study guides, makes lists of interesting words from her reading, and labors her way through the dictionary.
In fact, Kerry won the spelling bee competition when she was 13 years old. Her deliberate practice paid off. The author of Grit goes on to say “that It wasn’t the type of activities like reading for pleasure or playing word game or getting quizzed on words with someone else BUT IT WAS the “unassisted and solitary spelling practice like memorizing new words from the dictionary, reviewing words in a spelling notebook and committing to memory Latin, Green, and other word origins.” ANGELA DUCKWORTH, GRIT
After Ericksson and Duckworth’s study in the Spelling Bee they came up with this conclusion. “On average, spellers rated deliberate practice as significantly more effortful, significantly less enjoyable, than anything else they did to prepare for competition.”
I wonder if you can see yourself in this? I wonder if you cannot?
Does it sound FUN? No, it’s the opposite - it’s actually LESS enjoyable... and more effortful, that’s for sure.
But, is it worth it? Every day of the week. Why? because your writing, your speaking, and your passion are transformational. You have experienced a transformation, haven’t you? You’ve experienced a transformation in your health. You were tired with low energy and now you are running circles around your kids. You’ve experienced a transformation in your work. You were working ALL THE TIME. And, now? You are accomplishing more in LESS time and getting the best sleep of your life. You’ve experienced a transformation in your life. You were reading the Bible just to check it off the list. And, now? You wake up BEFORE your alarm clock to meet with Jesus.
We’ve all experienced a transformation to what LED US and makes us passionate to help others reach that transformation with our products and services. If you haven’t then why are you doing the thing you do???? That may be a question you need to ask yourself.
If you judge your work by its FUNNESS scale it may not be that attractive. But, isn’t that kinda the point? If it was easy, then EVERYONE would do it!!! But, you my friend are made for more. You are made to passionately carry out God’s assignment in your life. LIke a good ol’ Folgers commercial from the ’80s: you are GOOD TIL THE LAST DROP, missy.
Are you ready to share your passionate transformation with the world? Will it be hard, will it take more effort?, but you will become someone who deliberately practices to get better at your craft? You’ve heard it said, “Go BIG or GO Home?” There is a lady who is waiting for you to carry out God’s assignment to lean into the hard so that she can get the transformation that you got. Don’t make her wait any longer.
I have said that, “ every day you put off your assignment is one less day of speaking into your future client’s ears.
Let’s lean into the hard business owners!! Lean into the effortful practice.
In leaning into the hard and the effortful practice you will need a coach, a guide, someone who has been there leading you so that you can live out your assignment with excitement. The real value is more lives transformed!!! Recently, I had a coaching client have an Instagram reel go viral but added no followers but then said… “We’ve been getting more clients coming from the podcast….after listening they feel like they can trust us.” And, I know seeing more lives transformed is what you want, isn’t it?
