ep 82: Stop Hiding & Take the Mic

I had a client reach out and ask me a question.  It was that she didn’t see anyone else like her doing this…starting a podcast. She asked me: “Am I too _______ to be starting a podcast?”

I immediately replied “No, ma’am!” and proceeded to tell her the story of my son when he was 2 in the backseat of the car.

I took him to a gas station. To eat Mexican food.  We had Mexican food cause you know, Mexican food is better at the gas station. It just is.

But he did not like it. And I'm thinking, how dare you not like this authentic Mexican food? And so whenever I said, “I'm going to go get some Mexican food,” he'd reply “No, ma’am”.

No, ma'am. No, ma'am. No ma'am. It got to be a thing with him.
Do you want to go over here? “No, ma’am”

Do you want a cracker? “No ma’am.”

And he'd say that about almost anything - so that became something I’d say often, too ;-)

I told my client that I was going to say it to her.

“No, ma'am.”
“No, ma'am, you are not too ____, (fill in the blank)

  • too old for this

  • too introverted for this,

  • too quiet,

  • too loud,

  • too boring…

  • too WHATEVER you are saying in your head.

I also told her that it was a lie from the pit.  I encouraged her to listen to that still small voice of the Lord saying you're just getting started. I believe it. With all of my heart, I did not come alive until 3 years ago and I’m 43 now. I became a Christian when I was eight years old, but I did not come alive in what I knew my purpose was until I was 40, just a few years ago. When I knew this is what God is calling me to do. But I’m in good company, because:

  • Grandma Moses was 81 when she started painting.

  • Julia Child did not have her first cookbook written until she was 40.

  • And there are many others who started later in life whom we would look at and call successes

So I'm going to say to YOU: “No, ma'am.”
When you start doubting yourself - No ma’am.
When the enemy comes at you with that lie - No ma’am.

A friend and colleague of mine, Karen Laos, interviewed me on Instagram Live and we were talking about stepping up to the mic and not hiding behind it. (You can listen to/watch that here.)

When I started the “Friends of a Feather” podcast, I did not know that I had a story, and didn't even know that God had a story of mine that he wanted to share. or even to write my story of becoming a podcast coach and helping others start their podcast and the ripple effect of that.

I hid behind my interviews and highlighted my guests’ stories. So ironic that I was highlighting their stories, but that I didn't want to share mine. I was on a journey of really letting go and realizing that I had a story and not hiding behind those guests.

Karen and I were talking about stepping up to the mic and not hiding. There are three things that I shared with her and I'm going to share them with you, too.

You can remember them by thinking BCD.

B is: Believe you have something to offer

I believe that you have something to offer. It's not all you have to offer. It's what God has given you and me because he has created us and he doesn't create junk. So we need to believe that he has given us these gifts and that they are something. That they are good and that we can offer them back to him as a gift and glorify Him with it.

And I most certainly know that you have a lot to offer in the form of a podcast. If you need to talk it out with someone you can talk to me, schedule a 20-minute call with me so we can talk about your business and/or podcast idea.  Or if you don’t have a podcast idea I can help you with it

C is: Concentrate on offering value

When we're offering value and when we know that value is coming from our podcast, we don't really have time to give into negative thoughts.

We are thinking about others…not ourselves.
We are thinking “How can I give this person value?”
And when you do that, you don't have time for anything else.

D is: Just Do It

Do it scared.
Do it afraid.
Do it imperfectly - just do it. (And I know it's easier said than done.)
But if you start with that belief that you have something to offer, I'll pray that God would reveal that to you and reveal that competence, because competence only comes from Him, not ourselves!  He created us, He has a plan for each of us, and He will enable us to do it!

B: believe you have something to up something to offer,
C: concentrate on offering value, and then
D: just do it!

EVEN WHEN…

  • Even when you are feeling like an imposter,

  • Even when your Aunt Ida doesn’t understand what your business is about

  • Even when you get all in your head and in your thoughts

  • Even when you are scared

  • Even when it isn’t the way you pictured it

  • Even when you are a hot mess

So, let’s do it, even when!!!
