ep 84: What Is Keeping Your Podcast From Making Sales: The Mistake New Podcasters Make

The lightbulb went off.  I’m talking glowing, & shining bright!!!  You know when the lightbulb goes off for you…like when you’ve been striving toward something and you realize there’s a better and easier way to do the thing!!! It’s when the figurative Walls of Jericho come tumbling down on top of the assumptions you had!  And it’s SO freeing!

So lemme tell you the story…

I cautioned someone in my Flight Podcast group program about a trap I see a lot of business owners and new podcasters make.  The trap that I fear too many people fall into is they only have one type of format for their podcast.  The trap can look really appealing but it will hurt you in the end.

Although I feel that having ONLY ONE type of format is detrimental to your podcast and your business growth, the trap many podcasters flock to is solely doing interviews.

This is how it happens…they have seen popular influencers interview big-name guests and they think they can do the same thing.  That they can become just like that big influencer or have a large podcast or social media following because they have really big names on their podcast.

But, the truth is the best way to grow your business with your podcast is NOT by doing interviews.

Business owners make this mistake ALL THE TIME.  It Irritates me but most of all it breaks my heart. All this work. To highlight SOMEONE ELSE'S BUSINESS.  They may have good downloads but they aren’t making any money FOR THEIR OWN business.

Let me tell you what interviews do for your podcast:

  1. They grow your downloads for that specific big-name interview episode

  2. It is being LEGIT: The Authority you build with having a guest on your podcast is a big deal. People take you more seriously when you have a big name and can “hold your own” with them.

  3. Helps YOU feel like a big deal.

Interviews are great to GROW your podcast as in the number of downloads.  But, unless you have a strategic plan IN THAT INTERVIEW, it will not grow your business.  Think NEEDLE-MOVING ACTIVITIES.

Why do we feel we have to do interviews ONLY?

  1. FOMO “Everybody else does it”

  2. We possibly want validation with the big-name guests

  3. We are hiding behind the mic… (Listen to Episode 82!) if we are featuring others then we can’t share what God has given US to do.

Also, NOT ALL PEOPLE ARE MEANT TO INTERVIEW…AT ALL.

THEY interrupt, they don’t ask good questions and they just do it because the people have a book coming out. INSERT EYE ROLL (if you do this, please offer value. PLEASE.)

I want to share with you how you can have an interview on your podcast which both highlights their business, offers value to your listeners, AND helps your business.

I will be interviewing a new Instagram friend of mine…Virginia Kerr.  You have seen and heard of her on Instagram and on her podcast as This is Virginia Kerr.    She will be offering value to my listeners about video strategy BUT ALSO I am specifically asking her a question about how she HIRED her business coach FROM HEARING THE COACH ON THE COACHES PODCAST.  As a podcast strategist that is PROOF that podcasting CAN GROW your business, she is PROOF of that!  (Also, I have an affiliate link for her video course This is Video School.)

So there are 3 BENEFITS to her coming on my show. and THAT is when an interview is GOLD.

So back to my story about the group member whose lightbulb came on for her podcast. I think she even felt relieved to not HAVE TO do an interview podcast EVERY SINGLE WEEK.  And, she realized that the way to grow her business through a podcast IS NOT featuring someone else.  There is space for that, but the most important thing she needs to do is give value and then point your person BACK TO YOUR SERVICE.
